This year, Janmashtami will be celebrated on August 30. Since Krishna was born at midnight, the puja for him is performed in Nishita Kaal. This year it will be between 11:59 PM on August 30 to 12:44 AM on August 31. The day is celebrated to mark the birth of Lord Krishna, who is believed to be the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. People decorate their house, wear new clothes and worship Lord Krishna. Kamalavati Ji and Vrishbhanu Ji were sad as Radha Rani was born blind. Therefore, kept on praying to supreme to restore her eyesight. Narada Ji met Vrishbhanu Ji and informed him to invite Nanda Rai Ji and Yashoda Ji of Gokul along with there beautiful infant – Krishna. The Krishna Janmashtami is a very important festival for all the Hindus and they also keep fast on the same day. The devotees break their fast on the next day after midnight. Also, they worship Lord Krishna by singing songs and aarti or Lord Vishnu and Krishna. Krishna, in fact, took birth in a prison cell. A sage had told his egoistic uncle, King Kamsa, that he would be killed by his sister Devaki’s child. So Kamsa imprisoned Devaki and had each child she bore murdered. However, Devaki, and her husband, Vasudeva, finally were able to sneak one child off to safety. This was Sri Krishna. They sent Krishna off to Vraja, where he was raised by a foster mother, Yasoda. It was in Vrindavan, one of the villages of Vraja, that Krishna won the hearts of the gopis, the cowherds of the village. “By spending all his time with the gopis of Vrindavan—playing with them, joking with them, stealing their butter and milk, etc- what he actually was doing was stealing their hearts,” Mom Says. It is from this that Krishna was given the name “Chitta Chora” [one who steals the mind].
Kamsa sent many assassins to kill Krishna, but none of them were able to do so. And in the end, Krishna returned to Mathura and killed Kamsa, restoring dharma to the land. Happy Krïshñä Janmashtami to All of You.
